I can almost promise you that Sean Hannity won't issue a correction either. Thank God we have Jon Stewart to expose these idiots because the Villagers are too busy kissing their ass and sucking up to Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes to notice evidently.

MIchael Moore Schools Sean Hannity On The Financial Crisis

I gotta believe some of Sean Hannity's most ferverent viewers' heads exploded watching this segment. It would be hard for anybody, even his biggest fan, to try to make the case that Hannity came out on top of this encounter with Michael Moore. After all, facts have a well documented liberal bias.

All Death All The Time On FoxNews

Its a wonder to me that the FoxNews viewers don't pull their own plug after watching this kind of vitriol.

That's what you call indoctrination folks.

You Don't Have To Believe Me, Unless You Want To Believe Me, But Its Real....So Real

When I got a chance to look at the CIA's IG report for the first time today at the Washington Independent's website I almost immediately noticed two things, one of which may not be a big deal, the other one is almost certainly a big deal.

Here was the first thing I noticed.

Several months earlier, in late 2001, CIA had tasked an independent contractor psychologist who had [redacted] experience in the U.S. Air Force's Survival, Evastion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training program, to research and write a paper on Al-Qa'ida resistence to interrogation techniques.

Now honestly I might just be uninformed about this issue but I, personally, didn't know until now that the CIA had set out to try to figure out ways to overcome Al Qa'ida's resistance to interrogation techniques torture so early on in the game. I mean basically at best if we captured Al Qa'ida operatives right after 9-11 and this edict came down at the end of 2001 then that means in the intervening 3 months basically the CIA found that these operatives were impervious to normal and accepted means of interrogation and were already looking to up the ante.

The problem, of course, is that even on the face of it this doesn't add up. It goes to a point I made a few months back and that is that the whole justification for supposed "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques" was that they were supposed to be used when traditional methods of interrogation failed. But that clearly couldn't have been the case with Khalid Sheik Muhammed because he was waterboarded 183 times in the first month of us having him in custody. It didn't appear to be the case with Abu Zubaydah either who was supposedly the first high value target to be waterboarded. And in this passage in the IG report it would seem that the third man who was waterboarded, Al Nashiri, also wasn't given the opportunity to cooperate before EITs or torture take your pick, were employed.

The interrogation of Al-Nashiri proceeded after [redacted] the necessary Headquarters authorization [redacted] psychologist/interrogators began Al-Nashiri's interrogation using EITs immediately upon his arrival.

Now everyone knows that there is something seriously fishy that is connected to Al-Nahsiri because you hardly ever hear the current administration or the previous administration even mention this guy as one of the people who were waterboarded. Instead they just focus on Abu Zubaydah and KSM. Hopefully one day we will get to the bottom of what actually happened to him. I suspect that he might not have been who they thought was which would be terribly embarrassing if it got out that they waterboarded an innocent man.

The second thing I found was this passage about waterboarding and why the interrogators were not going strictly by the OLC memo guidelines as to how it would be administered. (thanks for the transcription Attackerman)

OIG’s [Office of the Inspector General's] review of the videotapes revealed that the waterboard technique employed at [REDACTED] was different from the technique as described in the DoJ opinion and used in the SERE training. The difference was in the manner in which the detainee’s breathing was obstructed. At the SERE School and in the DoJ opinion, the subject’s airflow is disrupted by the firm application of a damp cloth over the air passages; the interrogator applies a small amount of water to the cloth in a controlled manner. By contest, the Agency interrogator [REDACTED] continuously applied large volumes of water to a cloth that covered the detainee’s mouth and nose. One of the psychologists/interrogators acknowledged that the Agency’s use of the technique differed from that used in SERE training and explained that the Agency’s technique is different because it is “for real” and is more poignant and convincing.

Now this is vital information for two different reasons.

The first reason its important is a legal one. When asked about the difference between what the OLC and DOJ memos outlined as being acceptable as waterboarding and what the psychologists and interrogators were doing in practice, at least one of those psychologists/interrogators acknowledged that not only was there a difference, but that it was also entirely intentional. Im no legal scholar but that sounds pretty much like an admission of guilty to a layman. Especially when this unnamed person invoked the words "for real" to describe the difference. I don't see a way that someone can explain away these psychologists/interrogators disregarding the already flawed OLC memos in order to intentionally treat the detainees in an even more harsh manner than was laid out for them. So it would appear that the Special Prosecutor whom Attorney General Eric Holder just chose to investigate torture will have some pretty nice targets right off the bat.

The second reason this is important is purely political and I make no apologies for that. For months torture apologists like Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Liz Cheney, just to name a few, hid behind our troops to try to make a bogus argument that waterboarding was not torture. Their meme which got repeated time and time again on FoxNews and in the wingnut blogosphere is that "it couldn't be torture because we do it to our own members of the military". Many of them took it further and tried to paint anyone who rightly labeled waterboarding as torture, as it has been prosecuted as such for decades, to be claiming that we also tortured our men and women in the military. Even for the GOP this was a particularly disgusting attack in their attempt to excuse the rancid bullshit that was perpetrated by the Bush administration, supposedly in the name of national security.

Well no longer can they make such a claim when it comes to what we did with these detainees. Not only did the CIA Inspector General observe for himself that they were not following the guidelines to waterboard a detainee as was proscribed in the OLC memos which were cribbed from SERE school teachings, at least one of the persons participating in the waterboarding acknowledged that it wasn't the same thing because with the detainees it was "for real".

Now the next step is that when liberals or progressives of Democratic members of Congress go on any cable news shows or Sunday talk shows to talk about demanding accountability for torture, they need to familiarize themselves with the information in this document. No longer should they allow Republicans and Conservatives to try to frame this issue as being not a big deal. I understand that we have our plates full with health care reform but if there was ever a time to demand accountability from the Bush administration I think its now. We have to try to strike when the iron is hot in my honest opinion. And we have to be armed with the facts not as we see them but as they are spelled out in this CIA IG report.

I will be posting more on the report as I comb through it.

Hannity Hates YouTube

And the Huffington Post, and MediaMatters and just about any other fact checking website.

Only the most devoted cultist could possibly take Sean Hannity seriously.

Blah Blah Blah

I don't think even fans of Sean Hannity believe much of what he says these days. Still there is nothing wrong with passing along evidence of his lies.

On another topic, I wonder how Hannity is going to explain palling around with a terrorist.

Does The Word "Waterboarding" Give The Impression Its "Fun"

I doubt it. However that was a point that Erich "Mancow" Muller seemed to be making last night on "Countdown With Keith Olbermann". Its of course telling that every single layman who has been waterboarded confirms that its torture. Watching them get waterboarded seems to confirm to any reasonable person that its torture. But maybe there is some perception out there that "sprinkling water" on someone is not a big deal. I don't know but I do know that its been labled torture for centuries and we have prosecuted and put to death soldiers from other countries who did it to our people. Maybe it IS just a matter of messaging but I don't think it can reasonably be argued by anyone anymore that waterboarding isn't torture.

Notice that according to Mancow Sean Hannity called him and reiterated his belief that waterboarding isn't torture. Funny if he is that confident that it isn't why won't he allow himself to be waterboarded?

Rhetorical question of course.

Mancow Is More Of A Man Than Hannity

I absolutely LOVE this move by Keith Olbermann last night. Now its going to be hard for Sean Hannity to shake the appearance that he is much more of a coward than Erich "Mancow" Muller, a guy he competes with for radio audience share. I don't think it will motivate Hannity to finally actually submit to waterboarding, we can still hope though can't we, but I do believe that it will make some of his listeners and viewers look at him with a lot more skepticism.

Funny How Getting Waterboarded Can Change Your Perspective On Whether Or Not Its Torture

*Update: I found a YouTube clip that has more footage and the whole scene played out at once.

Now before we go any further I want to point out that what Erich "Mancow" Muller went through wasn't exactly the way waterboarding is done to our military nor what was done to the detainees. Usually the towel is placed over the mouth and nose (check OLC memos if you don't believe me) which makes it worse. Still this right wing radio talker could only last a grand total of 7 seconds. I wonder what he would have said if it was done to him almost 200 times in a month like we did to KSM.

Here is an excerpt from the accompanying article.

Listeners had the chance to decide whether Mancow himself or his co-host, Chicago radio personality Pat Cassidy, would undergo the interrogation method during the broadcast. The voters ultimately decided Mancow would be the one donning the soaked towel and shackles, and at about 8:40 a.m., he entered a small storage room next to his studio that was compared to a "dungeon" by Cassidy.

"The average person can take this for 14 seconds," Marine Sergeant Clay South answered, adding, "He's going to wiggle, he's going to scream, he's going to wish he never did this."

With a Chicago Fire Department paramedic on hand, Mancow was placed on a 7-foot long table, his legs were elevated, and his feet were tied up.

Turns out the stunt wasn't so funny. Witnesses said Muller thrashed on the table, and even instantly threw the toy cow he was holding as his emergency tool to signify when he wanted the experiment to stop. He only lasted 6 or 7 seconds.

"It is way worse than I thought it would be, and that's no joke,"Mancow said, likening it to a time when he nearly drowned as a child. "It is such an odd feeling to have water poured down your nose with your head back...It was instantaneous...and I don't want to say this: absolutely torture."

"I wanted to prove it wasn't torture," Mancow said. "They cut off our heads, we put water on their face...I got voted to do this but I really thought 'I'm going to laugh this off.' "

And this is precisely why the most bellicose wingnuts who say waterboarding isn't torture ie the Sean Hannity's and Liz Cheney's of the world, will never actually allow themselves to be waterboarded.

I Bet She Shuts Her Ass Up Next Time

Wingnut supreme of "The View", Elisabeth Hasselbeck evidently thought she could use a few Sean Hannity talking points and change Jesse "The Body" Ventura's mind about torture and waterboarding. What ensued was a rhetorical ass whupping that is probably going to sting for months. PWNED is probably too nice a word for what he did to her and her argument. Somebody should have told her that FauxNooz rhetoric doesn't work on people who know and know that they know.

I wish Ventura could come by and PWN her every single day. And I don't even watch the show lol.

Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down

Bill O'Reilly has a bad habit of cowardlysending "producers" to do ambush interviews on people he wants to try to embarass. But the problem with ambush interviews is sometimes you pick the wrong person to fuck with. It happened once before when Bill Moyers PWNED O'Reilly and the flack he sent to do his dirty work in a classic youtube moment. And it just happened again when they tried to go after Janeane Garafalo. I can't embed the video here but trust me its worth your time to click the link.

Its Not The Torture, Its The Pictures

FoxNews says we did not torture on the one hand, but on the other hand releasing pictures of us torturing is going to hurt our national security. One can only wonder what the color of the sky is on the planet they live on.

O'Donnell Calls Out Hannity On Countdown

What can I say, Lawrence O'Donnell has been on fire of late. I don't know if he is just really offended as most of us are about the fact that we tortured the detainees or if he is just getting more aggressive in expressing his views, but O'Donnell is telling it like it is here lately and I applaud him for that. Last night he so accurately described the mentality of the Sean Hannitys of the world. Its called projection and as he said Hannity is soft and because he knows torture would work on him he thinks it would be good to do to other people. Such an utter and complete PWNING.

Now I just hope that he is on Morning Joe sometime soon to bust Joe Scarborough in the mouth with the facts.

Bonus clip of O'Donnell tearing Liz Cheney a new one yesterday after her ridiculous interview on MSNBC.

Shuster Brings Teh Funny

Classic double entendre

Thats When You Know...

When Bernie Goldberg becomes the voice of reason for the right, thats when you know they have lost all credibility. His exchange in this MediaMatters clip with Sean "Hate Fest" Hannity could serve as a microcosm of the Republican Party right now. YOu have Goldberg who is an avowed batshit crazy wingnut trying to tell Hannity that even he is fed up with the irrationality of the right. And Hannity's response? Hands over his ears scream "nah nah nah nah nah".

I wonder if Rush Limbaugh is going to frag Bernie Goldberg today? Things are going to get really interesting on the right for the next 4 to 8 years. Hope you got your popcorn ready.

Mike Huckabee's Hactackular Fail

Quite a few people think that Mike Huckabee still has a chance at politics. They believe that although his Presidential campaign failed in the primary, that he has a message and a credibility with some areas of the country that might make him attractive in 2012 or 2016 to the Republican Party. Well after watching this back and forth with Sean Hannity I am now convinced that Huckabee will never run for office again because he is having too much fun as a hack for FoxNews.

Now it would be one thing if this was a speech that nobody knew about, but it was broadcast on ever cable station live including FoxNews. So it isn't like Mike Huckabee doesn't know the real context of the quote. But lets go to the transcript anyway.

In America, there's a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.

But in Europe, there is an anti-Americanism that is at once casual but can also be insidious. Instead of recognizing the good that America so often does in the world, there have been times where Europeans choose to blame America for much of what's bad.

On both sides of the Atlantic, these attitudes have become all too common. They are not wise. They do not represent the truth. They threaten to widen the divide across the Atlantic and leave us both more isolated. They fail to acknowledge the fundamental truth that America cannot confront the challenges of this century alone, but that Europe cannot confront them without America.

Ironically enough of course is that when President Obama talks about the arrogance and the dismissive and derisive attitude towards Europe in general and France in particular, he was DEFINITELY talking about the FoxNews crowd which champions such attitudes to their viewers. Now lets keep in mind that Huckabee is a bible thumping preacher. I could have sworn that in MY Bible there is a 10th Commandment prohibiting bearing false witness against your neighbor (I guess he didn't have enough time left over to study that part of the bible after he got done perverting any mention of "teh gays" in the scripture). But I digress. So does President Obama think America is just ordinary? Does he resent his country?

Why not start building high-speed rail? One thing that, as an American who is proud as anybody of my country -- I am always jealous about European trains. And I said to myself, why can't we have -- (applause) -- why can't we have high-speed rail? And -- and so we're investing in that, as well.

That's taken from the question and answer part of the speech but more to the point we can go to the answer he gave to Ed Luce of the Financial Times in response to a question about whether he believe in American Exceptionalism.

Q Thank you, Mr. President. In the context of all the multilateral activity that's been going on this week -- the G20, here at NATO -- and your evident enthusiasm for multilateral frameworks, to work through multilateral frameworks, could I ask you whether you subscribe, as many of your predecessors have, to the school of American exceptionalism that sees America as uniquely qualified to lead the world, or do you have a slightly different philosophy? And if so, would you be able to elaborate on it?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism. I'm enormously proud of my country and its role and history in the world. If you think about the site of this summit and what it means, I don't think America should be embarrassed to see evidence of the sacrifices of our troops, the enormous amount of resources that were put into Europe postwar, and our leadership in crafting an Alliance that ultimately led to the unification of Europe. We should take great pride in that.

And if you think of our current situation, the United States remains the largest economy in the world. We have unmatched military capability. And I think that we have a core set of values that are enshrined in our Constitution, in our body of law, in our democratic practices, in our belief in free speech and equality, that, though imperfect, are exceptional.

Now, the fact that I am very proud of my country and I think that we've got a whole lot to offer the world does not lessen my interest in recognizing the value and wonderful qualities of other countries, or recognizing that we're not always going to be right, or that other people may have good ideas, or that in order for us to work collectively, all parties have to compromise and that includes us.

And so I see no contradiction between believing that America has a continued extraordinary role in leading the world towards peace and prosperity and recognizing that that leadership is incumbent, depends on, our ability to create partnerships because we create partnerships because we can't solve these problems alone.

Here lies the fundamental difference between President Obama and the people who believe in him and a guy like Sean Hannity. See Hannity believes that leadership means you preach rainbows and unicorns no matter what. You never criticize or recognize shortcoming because in his world thats considered "weak". His view is the classic example of an enabler. As a parent he would be the type to never admonish his kids and who would always blame the teacher if the child failed. For Hannity's type its more important that you convince everybody that everything is great than taking the steps to make sure that things actually get to a situation where they ARE great. Thats why up until the day the White House finally had to admit that we had been in a recession since 2007 last September, Sean Hannity kept insisting that then Senator Obama was just making it all up and everything was fine. Its also why nobody should ever take anything he says seriously.

Now what it boils down to is that Mike Huckabee now is more concerned with joining in the smearing of our President than he is in presenting real honest criticism. You can bet that every misstatement of fact would come back to haunt him in any election campaign. Which is why I have no doubt that he is just banking on keeping his Tee Vee gig now. Whatever the case I have lost any respect for the man that I may have once had.
