At some point soon in the future the Democratic establishment along with the White House had better figure out that stuff like this is what is going to give the Republicans back the House and possibly the Senate if its allowed to keep happening. Right now we are allowing a small group of Republican light members of Congress to bring all of our legislation so far to the right as to not resemble mainstream Democratic thought. And I can promise you that those select few won't be the ones who really catch hell behind it, it will be the overwhelming majority of elected Democrats who rely on their base to come out in big numbers to vote for them in midterm elections. I truly believe that New Dems, ConservaDems and Blue Dogs wouldn't really mind if the Republicans took over Congress again so long as they keep getting money from their corporatist backers.
If somebody doesn't reign them in soon and stop "compromising" with them on issues that should amount to common sense and DEFINITELY amount to mainstream Democratic thought, we really will have a blood bath next year, no matter how bad the GOP screws themselves. When these folks start getting threatened of being stripped of seniority and or chairmanships then we will see how beholden they are to special interests. Until that day you can expect to see more of this kind of obstruction within our own party.
It is what it is.

The 45 Minute Lie
If only we were having a public investigation into how George Bush and Dick Cheney lied and their ideological allies in the media lied us into the war the way the British are over Tony Blair.
I wonder what public sentiment would be about those two jackasses then.

The Public Option Compromise
I haven't posted much on health care reform or the public option lately because since the bill has been in the Senate I have had a running headache every day over all the bullshit. Well supposedly last night the gang of 10 asshole coalition of Senators came to some kind of compromise. I have no idea if this means the bill will now pass or if its just another case of Democrats negotiating away the best policies for nothing, but Ezra Klein has a write up about it so I figured I would link it. This whole process has me so pissed off that I can't see straight at times, but I can tell you this, there will be a fallout if Democrats pass a bullshit bill.
It is what it is.

Just Because
I have no illusions that this ad will make Joe Lieberman even think for one second about supporting the public option, but at this point I will post anything that targets him just for the hell of it.

Coburn and Vitter Are The Wile E Coyotes Of The Senate

If you are like me, you grew up on Loony Tunes cartoons. Some of my favorite episodes featured Wile E Coyote plotting against the Road Runner. This guy would get ACME packages every day with some new scheme to do great bodily harm to the Road Runner but then, without fail, the great scheme would end up, literally at times, blowing up in his face.
Well GOP Senators Tom Coburn and David Vitter thought they had this great idea of how to really stick it to the Democrats in the Senate. Like their wingnut Republican base, they were SURE the Democrats weren't really serious about the public option and that they would never in a gazillion years agree to be placed on the public option themselves. Mind you this is the kind of crap you could hear on right wing radio or read on right wing blogs all day every day, which should have been the first clue that it was a misguided belief.
But since these cats just KNEW this to be the case they figured the would put all those lefty librul Senators on the spot and put forth an amendment to the health care reform bill where by if the bill passes, every Senator has to be enrolled in the public option. I am sure they were behind closed doors just a skinning and a grinning and slapping each other on the back over how clever they were. There was just one problem. The Democrats actually liked their amendment.
Not only did they like the amendment, they actually wanted to become cosponsors. Evidently it had never occured to them that this could happen and so they didn't know what to do. They hid out for days and didn't take any phone calls from their colleagues on the other side of the aisle. But unfortunately they couldn't prevent Democrats from cosponsoring the amendment once it came to the floor.
You can just picture Coburn and Vitter opening up tiny umbrellas as freshman Democratic Senator Al Franken to the floor to become a co sponsor of their amendment and thus bringing down that big boulder meant for the Democrats right down on their heads.

The Truth Should Matter
Yeah, the stimulus bill failed....
Steve Benen goes in on Dana Perino and her bullshit theory about how the stimulus failed because people THINK it failed. Really, if anything, that's just proof positive that it doesn't matter what reality is most of the time in this country, its all about perception. And of course its also points to the failure of our mainstream media to report the truth rather than employing horse race coverage.
Its very very depressing.

Stopping The Bleeding
The unemployment numbers for this month were unexpectedly VERY positive.
Now if I didn't know better I would suspect that this would be enough for the dumbass wingnuts in Congress and out to stop saying the stimulus was a failure. But unfortunately I DO know better and all this will do is add fuel to the fire for those morons in that they will say its "proof" that the free market works inspite of the stimulus bill.
If you are reading this and frowning in disbelief right now just wait a few days until it happens.
Waiting for the monthly job numbers to be released this morning, I saw the New York Times homepage run a headline that said the "economy shed 11,000 jobs in November." I assumed, in all sincerity, it was a typo.
After all, there were plenty of estimates on what to expect. The most optimistic number I saw was 130,000 job losses; the most pessimistic was 169,000 job losses. A total of 11,000 losses just didn't seem realistic.
And yet, that's what happened. The United States economy shed a surprisingly few 11,000 jobs in November, and the unemployment rate fell to 10 percent, from 10.2 percent in October, the Labor Department said Friday. [...]
The pace of job loss has been declining since a peak in January, and some economists say they expect a turning point to come in the late spring or summer, with employers finally adding workers as a recovery takes hold.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics also revised estimates from September and October, and both were better than previously thought.

Statement From Florida Democratic Senatorial Candidate Kendrick Meek On President Obama's Afghanistan Speech
From the press release:
"President Obama's strategic review and subsequent policy decision on Afghanistan puts us on a course for success that we lacked for many years. The decision to wage a second war in Iraq prevented the completion of the mission in Afghanistan. As a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly who has traveled to Afghanistan, I know that our mission will be completed with the help of our allies who are also shouldering the heavy burdens of war alongside our military, and these sacrifices and dangers are shared between all of our citizens. Our success will be realized when terrorists and their accomplices no longer view Afghanistan as a safe haven to plot murderous attacks on innocent civilians."
