Rev Al Still Got It

I don't care where you come down on Al Sharpton, there is no denying the fact that he straight dominated Chris Matthews and the racist Pat Buchanon in this conversation on Rush Limbaugh. It wasn't even close!

You See He's A Racist Because He Calls Out Racism

In the wingnut bizarro world the ONLY racists in the country right now are all minorities. Oh they will concede that racism exists in theory, but bring up specific racists like say Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck and they will argue you down that they have "never heard them say anything racist". Hell even supposed centrist white people on the left will stick up for the Limbaughs of the world, probably because they spend part of their day listening to his invective as a guilty pleasure. But you let a strong person stand up and call out white racists and racism against our first black President and you just watch to see people step up to demean and bismirch them.

The culprit this time is former President Jimmy Carter.

Now if there was ever a white man qualifed to talk about racism its Jimmy Carter. I mean the guy was the governor of Georgia during the tail end of the Civil Rights era for goodness sake. And yet he has committed the crime of saying something so emmintently true and reasonable as to make other white folks uncomfortable. He had the temerity to say that a lot of the opposition and vitriol towards President Obama, including Joe Wilson's outburst, are rooted in racism. After we have seen pictures of the President photoshopped with a bone through his nose, emails circulated with all kind of racist invective like a watermelon patch outside of the WhiteHouse and the racist ignorance spewed about President Obama's daughters at freerepublic how can anyone possibly refute President Carter on this?

And yet they will. Oh mark my words they will. Hell Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on Morning Joe this morning pushed back hard on President Carter's words even though they work with an avowed racist, Pat Buchanan, several times a week. It is what it is.

So just know that President Carter is in for a rough couple of weeks. And when you boil it all down its all because he decided to tell the truth. Doing so is heresy now in this upside down culture of ours.

Here is a test you can give to anyone to determine if you can have an honest debate with them about racism. If they won't admit that Rush Limbaugh is a racist then you should probably just move alone. Seriously, just try it, it works every time.

Tell The Truth, Shame The Devil

Joan Walsh and Kweisi Mfume held it down today on Hardball and didn't pull any punches about Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the right wing race baiters. I had to give her a standing ovation when Ms Walsh stood her ground when Tweety tried to make her back off her statement that Beck and Limbaugh are racists. Its ridiculous how he and other pundits try to hold water for these assholes instead of calling a spade a spade just like she did.

Southern Strategy Part Deux

I think Rachel Maddow is finally waking up to the reality of who her dear old "Uncle Pat" is and what his GOP stands for.

Setting The Rules

Professor Melissa Harris-Lacewell has a post up over at the Nation about the hearings for Supreme Court nominee, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, and the racist and sexist treatment she received from GOP Senators on the committee. The whole post is excellent but there was one thing that she hit on that I hadn't thought about but which struck a chord with me...

Like Eckford, Sotomayor has been praised for her dignity, her stillness, and the evenness of her voice as she responded to hostile mischaracterizations. She managed to laugh off sexist jokes. She didn't flinch when she was repeatedly interrupted. Senator Lindsey Graham warned that her confirmation could only be derailed if she had "a complete meltdown." The rules of the game were set: the Senators could mischaracterize her record, accuse her of racial bias, and mispronounce her name but she could not respond in kind. She could not be hurt or offended or angry. She had to remain a pillar of rationality and neutrality and control.

Now at the time when Graham made that pronoucement about a "complete meltdown" many media outlets painted it as him hinting at voting for her, or that he ws being a realist. But when I heard it I heard something different but I just couldn't put my finger on it. But I think Professor Lacewell knocks it out of the park with this one. The comment was meant to put her in a box lest she do ANYTHING that could be interpreted in any way as a "meltdown". That meant no angry retorts and no showing of emotion or passion. And in many ways it mean she had to "shuck and jive" in order to make it through the process unscathed. Don't misunderstand me, I am a major proponent of you doing what you have to do to get the job done. So I don't have anything bad at all to say about Judge Sotomayor handling herself accordingly. But I wonder just how many women of all colors watched these proceedings and decided to never to support a party that could be so openly sexist as well as racist as they were in questioning her.

Obviously I will not week for the GOP's electoral difficulties arising out of their treatment of Judge Sotomayor. But its just so curious to me how clueless and mindless these old white men continue to be to the world changing around them.

Update: I just wanted to post this TYT YouTube clip of John Roberts and Sam Alito avoiding answering questions during their confirmation to compare and contrast. Check out how Roberts gets a little heated a couple of times. I doubt anyone said he "melted down" back then but you can bet your ass that had Judge Sotomayor had done the same thing that would be all we were hearing about.

Yep, That'll Do It

I think this attack ad against Judge Sonia Sotomayor may just be the nail in the coffin for the foreseeable future with the GOP's relationship with Hispanics.

Where Is Your Outrage Bill O?!

For years Bill O'Reilly has claimed that he was some kind of culture warrior. An arbiter of right and wrong instead of right and left. Now even the casual observer recognizes that he has always been full of shit. But he has been particularly hypocritical when it comes to targeting people he claims are spreading hate. One of his favorite targets is dailykos and he continually misleadingly takes comments out of context to claim that the whole site is about hating conservatives. Even if that were true which it isn't there is a right wing site that is NOTORIOUS for not only spreading hate but also inciting violence which he never seems to get around to talking about. That site is of course Free Republic.

So how is it that a Canadian media source can find the time to call out an American blog full of hate and vitriol, but the self professed "culture warrior" has dropped the ball? That is a rhetorical question of course.

And what did the Vancouver Sun find when it looked into Free Republic? Asshole racists attacking President Obama's children.

"A typical street whore." "A bunch of ghetto thugs." "Ghetto street trash." "Wonder when she will get her first abortion."

These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative 'Free Republic' blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama's 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on the front.

The thread was accompanied by a photo of Michelle Obama speaking to Malia that featured the caption, "To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds."

Though this may sound like the sort of thing one might read on an Aryan Nation or white power website, they actually appeared on what is commonly considered one of the prime online locations for U.S. Conservative grassroots political discussion and organizing - and for a short time, the comments seemed to have the okay of site administrators.

Moderators of the blog left the comments - and commenters - in place until a complaint was lodged by a writer doing research on the conservative movement, almost a full day later.

"Could you imagine what world leaders must be thinking seeing this kind of street trash and that we paid for this kind of street ghetto trash to go over there?" wrote one commenter.

"They make me sick .... The whole family... mammy, pappy, the free loadin' mammy-in-law, the misguided chillin', and especially 'lil cuz... This is not the America I want representin' my peeps," wrote another.

Such was the onslaught of derision on the site that the person who originally complained about the slurs, a Kristin N., claims only one comment in the first hundred posted actually criticized the remarks as inappropriate.

A note on the front of the blog reads, "Free Republic does not advocate or condone racism, violence, rebellion, secession, or an overthrow of the government," but one comment on the thread read, "This disgusting display makes me more and more eager for the revolution," while another read, "I never actually wnated [sic] to be a pistol before but..."

Yeah Sarah Palin had it SOOOOOOOOOO bad. Setting aside the fact that I WISH I could meet one of these bitch assed cretins in a dark alley someday to teach them some fucking manners, why in the hell does our MSM continue to act like this kind of shit doesn't exist when its happening on one of he most prominent conservative blogs in the nation. While I call out Bill O for his hypocrisy of only trying to smear left wing blogs and never looking at right wing sites, the truth is the MSM is also abdicating their responsibility here. This kind of vitriol shouldn't be acceptable anywhere at anytime let alone on a "mainstream" conservative blog. When will we be hearing about this in our own media though?

Probably never.

You Have Got To Be Shittin Me

That's all I could say when I saw this story....

More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason.

"I heard this lady, she was like, 'Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?' She's like, 'I'm scared they might do something to my child,'" said camper Dymire Baylor.

The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. The Valley Swim Club is a private club that advertises open membership. But the campers' first visit to the pool suggested otherwise.

"When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool," Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email. "The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately."

The next day the club told the camp director that the camp's membership was being suspended and their money would be refunded.

"I said, 'The parents don't want the refund. They want a place for their children to swim,'" camp director Aetha Wright said.

Campers remain unsure why they're no longer welcome.

"They just kicked us out. And we were about to go. Had our swim things and everything," said camper Simer Burwell.

The explanation they got was either dishearteningly honest or poorly worded.

"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club," John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.

"Young Republican" Racism Same As Old Republican Racism.

Coon?! Seriously?!

This once again proves to me that social networking not only will not help Republicans in future electoral contests, it will likely be their downfall.

Its Karma Baby

For the last week following the announcement by President Obama that he was nominating Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, Tom Tancredo and Pat Buchanan have been banging their wingnut drums calling her a racist. I don't think it escaped anyone how ironic such a charge was coming from two men who made numerous blatantly racist and nativist statements in the past on the record. But in the past they have always left themselves the slightest bit of wiggle room to try to explain away their words. They have always maintained that they weren't racists and people had just taken them out of context. Of course they make no such concessions for Judge Sotomayor's words even though they didn't come close to approaching the vitriol spewed over the years by either man.

Well as fate would have it now both Tancredo and Buchanan are now faced with a very embarrasing situation of their own. You see in a twist of fate they share an executive director, Marcus Epstein who has made it very obvious that he is a racist. Once again we have to ask if our media is going to hold their feet to the fire and ask them if after all of the venom they have been spitting at Judge Sotomayor about racism, if they are willing to denounce one of their own.

On July 7, 2007, Marcus Epstein had too much to drink and stumbled onto Georgetown’s scenic, shop-lined M Street, walking in no particular direction. At 7:15 p.m., he bumped into a black woman, called her a “nigger,” and struck her in the head with an open hand. An off-duty Secret Service agent was watching. Epstein “jogged away,” according to the agent’s affidavit, and when Epstein was finally chased down, he “continued to flail his arms while being taken into custody.”

snip

Epstein was, and still is, one of the utility players in the immigration restrictionist fringe of the conservative movement, the executive director of both Pat Buchanan’s American Cause and former Rep. Tom Tancredo’s (R-Colo.) Team America PAC. Before and after the 2007 incident, Epstein worked (in an unofficial capacity) with Tancredo on his immigration-focused presidential campaign. He organized policy debates between conservative writers and leaders, including one with Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) that was broadcast on C-SPAN. Epstein built coalitions and hobnobbed at Washington parties without much trouble, despite a record of controversial race- and immigration-focused writings and awareness that something bad — the details weren’t clear — had happened in 2007 that convinced him to go on the wagon.

snip

Since May 19, when the watchdog group One People’s Project released the legal documents detailing Epstein’s arrest, the activist and his employers have come under fire. By late Monday, the University of Virginia Law School was telling reporters that Epstein would not be joining the class of 2012, even though he had planned to retire from his jobs at the end of June and “more or less suspend my political activities” to attend the school. But Epstein’s career up through yesterday was marked by controversial articles and speeches, happy feuds with politically correct organizations like the One People’s Project and the Southern Poverty Law Center, and no serious blowback from the mainstream conservative movement. (In 2008, Epstein contributed to the Southern Poverty Law Center in order to win a place on its “Wall of Tolerance” and to warn the group that it was “just one degree of separation away” from him.) Epstein’s past only became an issue after his patrons, Tancredo and Buchanan, spent a week bashing Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor as a “racist” and an an “affirmative action” candidate.

“It’s a huge breakthrough,” said Darrell Jenkins, a co-founder of the nine-year-old One People’s Project. “This game that keeps being played on the right, the way that their leaders will say anything and claim that they’re not racist — that got knocked out the window. Now we have proof that someone of that stature is running around like an idiot in the streets. Why would a Tom Tancredo associate himself with a Marcus Epstein? If he’s going to go after Sotomayor for an out-of-context quote from 2001, he’s got to answer for this.” Jenkins added that he would “be in the courtroom” when Epstein is sentenced.

Epstein, who turned 26 in May, has spent his entire adult life courting controversy. In 2003, as the president of College Libertarians and the editor of the conservative newspaper at the College of William and Mary, he
argued that conservatives erred by appropriating the rhetoric of Martin Luther King, Jr. instead of remembering his “philandering and plagiarism.” Before and after graduation Epstein carved out an online identity as an old-line, nativist conservative, contributing to the immigration restrictionist web site VDare.com. When he began working for American Cause, Epstein became a young and energetic proponent of ideas that were often attributed to angry, aging white men. “Pat graciously gave me an audio CD version of the book,” Epstein wrote in an article criticizing National Review for not reviewing Buchanan’s “State of Emergency,” an anti-immigration jeremiad. “The facts that he laid out in the book, made me so impassioned, upset, and often angry, that on more than one occasion, I literally had to pull over to a rest stop to compose myself for fear that I would get in a road rage incident.”

So will the hosts at MSNBC ask Pat Buchanan about Marcus Epstein the next time he goes on a rant about Judge Sotomayor? I guess there is only one way to find out.

Those Who Cast Stones Had Better Be Prepared To Duck

One of the many unintended consequences of the right wing's sexist and racist attacks on Supreme Court Justice nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor is the increased scrutiny of Supreme Court justices who have previously been confirmed. White men who were confirmed by a great majority and whom have been held up by the right wingers as having performed admirably after assuming their positions. Its funny what skeletons you find lurking in peoples' closets once you actually go looking for them.

Today Charles Blow compares the "she is a racist" attack on Judge Sotomayor over words she said in a speech in 2001, to some of the words and acts of former and current Supreme Court justices.

Now let’s look at a couple of the men who have ascended to the bench.

First, there’s former Chief Justice William Rehnquist. When the Supreme Court was considering Brown v. Board of Education, Rehnquist was a law clerk for Justice Robert Jackson. Rehnquist
wrote Jackson a memo in which he defended separate-but-equal policies, saying, “I realize that it is an unpopular and unhumanitarian position, for which I have been excoriated by my ‘liberal’ colleagues, but I think Plessy v. Ferguson was right and should be reaffirmed.”

Furthermore, Rehnquist had been a Republican ballot protectionist in Phoenix when he was younger. As the Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen correctly noted in 1986: Rehnquist “helped challenge the voting qualifications of Arizona blacks and Hispanics. He was entitled to do so. But even if he did not personally harass potential voters, as witnesses allege, he clearly was a brass-knuckle partisan, someone who would deny the ballot to fellow citizens for trivial political reasons — and who made his selection on the basis of race or ethnicity.”

Then there’s John Roberts, who replaced Rehnquist as the chief justice in 2005. That year, Newsday reported that Roberts had
made racist and sexist jokes in memos that he wrote while working in the Reagan White House. And, The New York Review of Books published a scolding article in 2005 making the case that during the same period that he was making those jokes, Roberts marshaled a crusader’s zeal in his efforts to roll back the civil rights gains of the 1960s and ’70s — everything from voting rights to women’s rights. The article began, “The most intriguing question about John Roberts is what led him as a young person whose success in life was virtually assured by family wealth and academic achievement to enlist in a political campaign designed to deny opportunities for success to those who lack his advantages.”

Gingrich tweeted that “a white man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw.” Make up your own minds about where Rehnquist’s and Roberts’s words and actions should fall on the racism spectrum, but both were overwhelmingly confirmed.

Until someone can produce proof of words and actions on the part of Sotomayor that even approach the scale of Rehnquist’s and Roberts’s, all I see is men throwing skeleton bones from class closets.

Some how I bet neither Judge Rehnquist nor Judge Roberts appreciate having their bigotted pasts revisted. I am not in the habit of giving wingnuts advice however you might want to quit while you're behind. Right now all you face is losing some Hispanic votes, but if you continue down this path you may well remove all legitimacy of the Republican party itself. Your call.

Two White Men, One Microphone

Bill Bennett and Fred Barnes put their pea brains together and decided that Judge Sonia Sotomayor, valedictorian of her senior class in high school, summa cum laude graduate of Princeton, winner of an award for highest academic achievement as an undergraduate, member of Yale Law review while getting her law degree, and the most professionally accomplished judges to be nominated to the Supreme Court in the last 30 years, MUST have been helped "tremendously" by affirmative action along the way. Because you know, us brown people could NEVER do it all on our own through hard work and perseverance. Nor could we reach the top of our profession without a handout rather than just on our own merit.

Such is the way some white men view any minority who achieves anything of note in this country not having to do with playing a sport.

Is this REALLY who you want as the face of your party, Republicans?

Keep Em Talking

The usual suspect are upholding their end of the bargain by spewing racist and sexist attacks at Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. Now the question is will the mainstream media ask establishment Republicans if they agree with Limbaugh or Dobbs or Buchanan or Coulter. Stay tuned.

Deep Thought

How long will it take the media to point out to racists like Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan and their followers like Joe Scarborough and Mike Barnicle that there were actually Hispanic plantiffs in the Ricci case along with white plantiffs?

Kinda hard for Judge Sotomayor to be a reverse racist against people of her own race, no?

Minority Outreach Fail

I am sure by now most people saw the fearmongering video the House GOP released yesterday asking if you felt safe. But did you know that one off the images in the video was a picture of President Obama meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus? One has to ask why that image was interspersed with images of terrorists right? Well it turns out the CHC is pretty pissed off about the inclusion of the picture as well as the ad itself.

“Latinos contribute to the progress of this nation, and have a long standing history of serving of our country,” Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.), chairwoman of the CHC, said in an accompanying statement. “The video posted on Congressman John Boehner’s official website is a completely inappropriate message for the leader of the minority party to send to the American people.”

“It’s disrespectful to the hard-working Latinos across the nation, serving in every sector of our economy and on our military’s front lines,” Velazquez’s statement continued. “The CHC demands an apology from the Minority Leader for this insensitivity and that the video be removed immediately.”

How is that minority outreach going for you GOP?

Justice

Not much to say other than major props go out to the cops for catching these racist morons.

From the AP:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Three white men were arrested Friday in connection with the torching of a predominantly black church hours after Barack Obama won the presidential election.

The Nov. 5 fire destroyed the Macedonia Church of God in Christ, which was under construction.
The suspects, Benjamin Haskell, 23, Michael Jacques, 24, and Thomas Gleason, 21, were held without bail after a hearing in federal court in Springfield. No pleas were entered at the hearing.

The men were charged with violating a civil rights conspiracy statute that makes it illegal to injure, threaten, or intimidate anyone from exercising their civil rights.

It wasn't immediately clear if the men were being charged with setting the fire.

snip

Investigators got a break in the case when a witness came forward and said he'd been driven to the site of the fire by two of the accused men. He said Jacques asked him who he had voted for in the election; when he responded "Obama," Jacques replied with a profane racial epithet, then said he thought Obama would be assassinated, the unidentified witness told investigators.

snip

Haskell told authorities Jacques said he was angry the country was going to have an African-American president and that he thought "blacks and Puerto Ricans would now have more rights than whites," according to the affidavit.

The church's pastor, the Rev. Bryant Robinson Jr., said after the fire that he suspected it was related to the election of Obama, who will be the nation's first black president.

He said Friday the arrests gave the church a sense of confidence the system doesn't allow people to get away with wrongdoing.
